---- — Rhum Academy of Music, 500 W. Superior St., will host a benefit concert at 7 p.m. March 8 to honor the memory of Sgt. 1st Class James “Jim” Vester. Walker County of Sulphur Springs will perform.

Vester responded to a Craigslist advertisement to purchase an iPad and was killed in an attempted robbery/shooting in Indianapolis in December. He left behind a wife, Jamie, and 16-month-old son, Gavin.

“He was a great husband, a terrific father, dedicated solider … a good man,” said Jamie. “Everyone has been so caring and helpful. I’m glad to be a part of an event that will celebrate and honor everything that was important to Jim -- the military, his family and his friends.”

Freewill donations will be accepted at the door. Proceeds will help Jamie develop a scholarship fund with Yorktown High School, where Jim went to school.

Organizers have received extensive silent auction items from country music artists Tim McGraw and the Zac Brown Band, as well as Steve Stevens (guitar player for Billy Idol) and others.

One of Walker County’s newest songs, “Only in My Dreams,” written by lead singer, Ivy Dene, shares the band’s love and support of all military families.
