Watch Night, also known as “Freedom’s Eve,” will be observed at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. The event came into prominence Dec. 31, 1862, when black people gathered together in churches and private homes to await news that the Emancipation Proclamation had become law. The observance has continued yearly since that time.

On New Year’s Day, the church will have a commemoration service at 11 a.m. The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863, that proclaimed freedom for 4 million slaves. It was not passed by Congress, but was issued by Lincoln on his authority as commander-in-chief of the armed forces. It also allowed freed slaves to be enrolled as paid members of the armed forces.

The church will present its 42nd annual Dr. M.L. King Jr. Memorial Gospel Music Celebration at 4 p.m. Jan. 19. To become part of the program, call 765-236-0499 or send an email to bishopceglenn@aol.com.
