Calvary Baptist Church

The church, 1967 W. Boulevard, will ring in the New Year with a variety show at 4 p.m. Jan. 5. Mary Larison and Marci Stahl, Irma Sanders, Pamela England, Jack and Marian Parker and Phil Drake at the piano will be on the program. There is no admission charge, but a freewill offering will be taken.

Christ Lutheran Church

Trumpeters Mark Murray and Michele Robeson Howard will perform the fifth program in the Fine Arts Series Music at Christ at 12:10 p.m. at the church, 3401 S. Dixon Road. There is no charge for the concert, which will last 20 to 30 minutes. A light lunch will follow, and donations are suggested.

Barbara Hobbs will present a piano program Feb. 5.

Fountain of Life Word and Worship Center

Watch Night, also known as “Freedom’s Eve,” will be observed at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. The event came into prominence Dec. 31, 1862, when black people gathered together in churches and private homes to await news that the Emancipation Proclamation had become law. The observance has continued yearly since that time.

On New Year’s Day, the church will have a commemoration service at 11 a.m. The Emancipation Proclamation was an executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863, that proclaimed freedom for 4 million slaves. It was not passed by Congress, but was issued by Lincoln on his authority as commander-in-chief of the armed forces. It also allowed freed slaves to be enrolled as paid members of the armed forces.

The church will present its 42nd annual Dr. M.L. King Jr. Memorial Gospel Music Celebration at 4 p.m. Jan. 19. To become part of the program, call 765-236-0499 or send an email to bishopceglenn@aol.com.

A sermon series, “Once Upon a Time,” is underway during the 9 a.m. traditional and 10:30 a.m. contemporary services Sundays at 2900 E. Markland Ave.

New Beginnings Christian Fellowship

“Holy Hushes of Christmas [Luke]” is the sermon Pastor Jeff Russell will present at 10 a.m. Sunday in the church, 1900 S. Berkley Road. It will focus on the questions: What happened within us? What can we glean from this holy time that sometimes seems like it is anything but holy?

Soul Anchor Apostolic Church

Having trouble signing up for health care reform? Applications for the Affordable Care Act will be available 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 3 to 4 p.m. the first Sunday of each month at the church, 616 N. Union St. All are welcome. Cowboy Church will be observed at 6 p.m. Jan. 4 at 1810 E. Bradford, Marion. The service and attire will be casual.
