Course to teach mental health first aid

---- — The Mental Health Association of Howard County, Oasis Counseling Center and Community Howard Regional Health are offering an eight-hour interactive mental health first aid training course for adults from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 7 at the West Campus, 829 N. Dixon Road. The cost is $35 per person and includes books, class and lunch by Half Moon Restaurant.

Mental health first aid is the help offered to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate treatment and support are received or until the crisis is resolved.

The certification course presents an overview of mental illness and substance use disorders, introduces the risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems, builds understanding of the impact or mental illnesses, and teaches a five-step action plan to help an individual in crisis.

Those who successfully complete the program will become a certified “mental health first-aiders.” It offers eight continuing education units.
