Citizens' police academy starting soon

Applications for the class can be obtained at City Hall.

The Kokomo Police Department’s Citizens’ Police Academy is now accepting applications for its upcoming class for those who want to learn more about law enforcement.

People interested in attending the eight-week session may obtain an application at the Kokomo Police Department, 100 S. Union St., front lobby or under the KPD Forms and Applications section at www.CityofKokomo.org. There is also a link on the KPD Facebook page. All applications must be returned to the Kokomo Police Department by March 3. Applicants who meet the requirements will receive an acceptance letter.

Capt. Chris Smith said the Citizens’ Academy began in 2000 to give residents a feel for what officers do and the training they receive.

There is no charge for the classes. The eight sessions are held once a week on Wednesdays. The classes will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at the City Building Council Chambers, 100 S. Union St. The first class will begin March 5. The class will not meet April 9 and graduation is scheduled for April 30, Smith said.

The Citizens’ Academy will take approximately 25 applicants. Applicants must be 18 years old with no felony record or criminal arrests in the last three years. Applicants also are subject to a background check.

Applicants must attend seven out of eight sessions to graduate. Those who graduate will receive a certificate and become eligible to become a member of the Kokomo Police Department’s Citizens’ Academy Alumni Association.

For further information on this program, call Capt. Chris Smith at 765-456-7250 or email cdsmith@cityofkokomo.org.
