Sporty & practical: 2006 Chevrolet Malibu LTZ sedan

By KEN CHESTER JR.
Motor News Media columnist

As the second domestic sedan off its global Epsilon platform architecture in the United States, the Chevrolet Malibu sedan is a shining testament to the “Chevrolet Renaissance” in sedans. For 2006, Malibu receives a new front-end appearance with a sleek, dual-port grille design. The updated exterior look includes body-color side moldings for a more integrated and upscale appearance.

Built at the automaker’s Fairfax District assembly complex in Kansas City, Kan., Malibu welcomes a new uplevel trim level — LTZ— to the 2006 lineup, with additional premium features. The standard upgraded features include the following: power adjustable pedals, power driver-seat height adjuster, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, rear interior reading lights, garage door opener, leather seating surfaces, factory-installed remote vehicle starter system, dual heated power side view mirrors, and OnStar communications system with a one year Safe & Sound Plan. A rear spoiler, larger P225/50R17 tires and chrome-plated aluminum wheels add to the sporty exterior look. XM Satellite radio joins the LTZ roster as an available option.

The midsize front-drive Malibu LTZ sedan is powered by a 3.5L V6 prime mover bolted to a smooth-shifting electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission. The basic chassis dynamics that carry the Malibu were developed in conjunction with GM’s Opel subsidiary in Germany. The result is the best of both worlds: precise, linear steering feel, confident road manners, predictable handling and controlled ride motion coupled to a comfortable, smooth, quiet ride.

On the road, the Malibu LTZ is

impressively responsive, with handling and control that are reassuring at speed. A compact independent gas-pressurized MacPherson front suspension works with a four-point isolated front cradle with tuned bushings, a four-link rear suspension, and front and rear stabilizer bars designed to enhance ride and handling.

Inside the cabin is where the Malibu really shines. Its design is fresh,

modern, and uncluttered — one of GM’s best interior configurations. Displays and controls are well-laid out and easy to use and operate. Equipped to the gills, consumers will think the Malibu LTZ costs thousands more.

The driver enjoys a commanding outward view of the road. The driver’s seat is equipped with a power height adjustment and manual fore/aft adjustment with adjustable lumbar

support. The center console features a comfortable armrest with a large storage bin and power point.

If that is not enough, the Malibu features a front passenger seat that folds flat to add to the sedan’s cargo carrying abilities. Rear passengers enjoy a comfortable seating space. The 60/40 split rear seat features separate seatback releases located in the cargo area.
