INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis will offer a course on comic books and graphic fiction this summer.

IUPUI says art instructor Mark Harper will teach the class, called The History of American Comic Books and Graphic Fiction." The 12-week class will begin later this month.

Harper says the class is about more than muscular men in colorful tights.

He says students also will discuss the economics of comic books, which have spawned multi-million dollar movie franchises such as "Iron Man" and "Batman." Underground comics of the 1960s with social and political content will also be a topic.

Herron School of Art and Design lists the course among its advanced classes in art history.

Students will be required to read as many as 30 comic books.
