INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A lot more Indiana students are walking to school Wednesday.
Organizers say more than 70 schools across the state are participating in National Walk to School Day.
The Indiana Safe Routes to School Partnership and a group known as Health by Design are encouraging schools and parents throughout the state to help students walk or bike to school Wednesday to experience the health benefits.
Coordinator Kim Irwin says walking to school used to be common, but today the number of students walking or biking to school is at an all-time low of 13 percent overall. She says backers are working to ensure infrastructure and educational efforts support safe routes for students to walk or bike to school.
