ANDERSON (AP) — A central Indiana city has less than 60 days to repay the federal government $145,000 in mishandled flood assistance.
The Herald Bulletin reports the Federal Emergency Management Agency wants Anderson to repay a portion of funds granted from 2009-2011.
The city took four installments of nearly $545,000 over two years, but Mayor Kevin Smith says the preceding administration failed to spend matching funds to buy homes in flood-prone areas of the city as authorized.
He said Thursday the development could make it harder for the city to obtain grants.
Smith says the $145,000 to repay FEMA will have to come out of the city’s general fund operating balance.
The Associated Press couldn’t contact former mayor Kris Ockomon for comment because his phone number was unlisted.
