Crowd argues against combining Muncie high schools

MUNCIE (AP) — Hundreds of people packed the Muncie Southside High School auditorium to argue against the possibility of closing the school.

Many of them wore the school's color red during the public hearing Wednesday night. Muncie school officials are holding a series of meetings as they consider options to deal with the loss of nearly 1,000 students in recent years.

The Star Press reports most people urge officials to reject any option that includes consolidating the city's two high schools.

Southside graduate Shirley Sloan said she hoped her granddaughter would soon be attending the school. Sloan says many people would have their hearts broken if the school was consolidated with Muncie Central High School.
