Large fire ravages several Fort Wayne warehouses

FORT WAYNE (AP) — Firefighters have worked through the night in Fort Wayne to extinguish hot spots from a massive blaze that destroyed at least six buildings in an old industrial complex.

Crews needed more than six hours before they were able to bring the fire largely out Monday night.

Deputy Fire Chief Mark Nelson tells The Journal Gazette the buildings were largely warehouses with items such as wooden pallets and the fire quickly spread in the complex east of the city's downtown.

Nelson says no hazardous materials were stored in the buildings.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries but no one else was reported hurt.

WANE-TV reports excavation crews worked early Tuesday on moving debris so firefighters could pour water on smoldering areas.

A cause for the fire wasn't immediately determined.
