Ind. troopers remind motorists about school buses

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana State Police are reminding motorists about state laws concerning school buses, flashing lights and stop arms.

They say when approaching a stopped school bus with its flashing red lights activated and its stop arm extended, all motorists are required to stop, even on multiple-lane highways, no matter which direction they're traveling.

The only exception is for motorists traveling in the opposite direction on a highway divided by a barrier or unimproved median. If there's no unimproved median or barrier, then motorists in all lanes in all directions must stop.

Troopers say disregarding a school bus stop arm is punishable by a maximum fine of $10,000. They say bus drivers are quick to report violators.
