S. Ind. man rescued after floodwaters sweep him away

Petersburg — Conservation officers have rescued a southwestern Indiana man they found clinging barefoot to a bridge abutment after floodwaters swept him off his four-wheeler.

Thirty-year-old Michael D. Christmas of Velpen was rescued Saturday night by conservation officers who launched a rescue boat into a Pike County cornfield flooded by heavy weekend rains.

Christmas was found about 100 yards into the floodwaters clinging to a bridge abutment where he'd spent about three hours. He was treated for hypothermia and released from a Jasper hospital.

Christmas was returning home from work in Otwell when he tried driving his four-wheeler through floodwaters, but a current separated him from the vehicle more than 100 miles southwest of Indianapolis. The current swept away his shoes as he made his way to the bridge abutment.
