Indiana schools chief to discuss ISTEP troubles

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana's state schools superintendent is expected to discuss her next steps in reviewing results from the ISTEP exam after computer troubles disrupted test-taking by thousands of students across the state this spring.

Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz has scheduled a Monday news conference at the Statehouse to talk about the ISTEP review process.

A Department of Education spokesman said two weeks ago that the agency was working to find an independent evaluator to assess the test's validity. Test contractor CTB/McGraw-Hill has said the problems would likely delay results until July.

Problems with the online format affected roughly 70,000 tests and some school administrators want the results ruled invalid. School officials reported that computer screens froze and many students were forced to log back in repeatedly while taking the test.
