Deal appears near on Indiana school safety bill

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana House and Senate negotiators appear close to agreeing on a final version of a bill that would start a grant program to help school districts hire police officers and buy safety equipment.

The bill could win final passage by Friday after the Republican-controlled House pulled provisions last week that would have required all public schools to have gun-carrying employees during school hours.

Bill sponsor Sen. Pete Miller of Avon says a new state school safety board wouldn't just send money to school districts but work with them on ways to improve school security.

A House-Senate conference committee discussed the bill on Tuesday, and Miller says he doesn't expect trouble in reaching a compromise version. The Senate budget proposal included $10 million a year toward the school grant program.
