Central Indiana troop loses sponsor over gay youth vote

WHITELAND (AP) — A central Indiana Boy Scouts troop has lost its church sponsorship following the organization's national decision to allow the participation of openly gay youths.

Cub Scout Pack 617 chairman Don Sanders wrote to parents that Grace Assembly of God church in Whiteland would no longer sponsor their pack.

The Assemblies of God churches sponsors about 2,300 Scouts nationwide, and the congregation's executive has said it was severing ties with the Boy Scouts of America over the decision.

Crossroads of America Council spokeswoman Emily Elliott tells The Indianapolis Star that the group didn't know of any previous scout troops in the state losing sponsors or troop leaders following vote to allow gay youths. Elliott says the council would help the Whiteland pack find a new sponsor.
