Legislators to hear sentencing laws overhaul

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A sweeping plan to overhaul Indiana's criminal sentencing laws will go before a legislative committee after Republican Gov. Mike Pence said last week he worried the proposal wasn't tough enough on low-level drug offenders.

The proposal aims to direct more people convicted of low-level felonies to work release and other local programs rather than sending them to prison. It would also require those convicted of the most-serious crimes to spend more time in prison.

The House approved the bill in an 80-13 vote last month, and the Senate's criminal law committee has a public hearing about it Tuesday morning.

Pence told reporters last week that he believed the bill should send a message that the state is tough on drug dealers.
