Man dies in trench collapse at Marion home

MARION (AP) — Authorities say a man was killed and another injured when the walls of a trench collapsed onto them at a northeastern Indiana home.

The Grant County Sheriff's Department says the collapse happened Wednesday evening at a home just outside Marion. Emergency crews arrived to find 55-year-old homeowner Ross Hoffman buried up to his chest and friend Jason Ewer buried to his waist.

The department says Hoffman was unresponsive when crews dug him out and he later died at Marion General Hospital.

Ewer is a Grant County sheriff's deputy who was off duty when the collapse happened at the site. He was treated at the hospital and released.
