Ind. man faces cruelty charge in horse deaths

DUPONT, Ind. (AP) — A southern Indiana man faces animal cruelty and other charges following the discovery of eight dead horses and dozens of others without food and water.

Fifty-one-year-old Jeff Hayes of Dupont was arrested last week on charges of failure to dispose of a dead animal, cruelty to an animal and animals running at-large.

Deputies found eight dead horses, five of which were piled up in a ravine, and another 90 malnourished horses in two separate pastures with no access to food or water.

The surviving horses have been taken to foster farms throughout Jefferson County, but one has since died.

Sheriff John Wallace tells The Madison Courier his department has been "inundated" with calls from people offering to donate money to help care for the horses.
