Indiana House speaker out with knee infection

Indianapolis — The leader of the Indiana House will miss at least the next week of the legislative session following surgery for a knee infection.

A House Republican spokeswoman says Speaker Brian Bosma learned from tests on Monday that an infection had developed in a knee that he had replaced last summer and he needed immediate surgery.

Bosma wasn't present in the House on Monday, and the House statement says he hopes to return to work late next week or soon after.

Bosma will be absent as the General Assembly heads toward its late April deadline for adjourning this year's legislative session.

Major items still being debated include the new two-year state budget and Republican Gov. Mike Pence's proposed individual income tax cut.
