Police: Bloomington vandalism may be gang-related

Bloomington —

Bloomington police say they're investigating two recent reports of cars being spray-painted with the Star of David as possible gang-related vandalism and not as suspected hate crimes.

Sgt. Joe Crider tells The Herald-Times police believe the graffiti may be gang-related and isn't directed at the Jewish faith. Detectives say the six-pointed star accompanied by the letters "FOL" are likely associated with the Chicago-based Folk Nation gang.

The Folk Nation uses a Star of David symbol to represent gang leader "King" David Barksdale, who died in 1974.

But The Hillel Center's Rabbi Sue Silberberg worries there could still be possible anti-Semitic motives behind the vandalism. She says one of the vandalized cars is owned by a recent Indiana University graduate who is Jewish and felt threatened by the vandalism.
