Indiana district expects student loss from closure

HYMERA, Ind. (AP) — A southwestern Indiana school district is expecting to lose nearly all the students from a small town's high school and elementary school that are set to close.

That comes as a community group in the Sullivan County town of Dugger is making plans to keep Dugger Elementary and Union Junior-Senior High School open as charter schools this fall.

The Sullivan Daily Times reports that Northeast School Corp. Superintendent Mark Baker told the district's school board on Monday that only a handful of the roughly 340 students from the Dugger schools are planning to stay in the district's remaining schools.

The board voted last year to close the schools in a budget-cutting move.

Baker says the loss of the students will leave the district with too many teachers.
