Some Muncie students look to leave since school closure vote

MUNCIE (AP) — The Muncie School Board's decision to close one of the city's two high schools has some students looking to enroll elsewhere.

Officials from some school districts outside Muncie say they've talked with numerous students and parents about transferring since the Nov. 18 vote to turn Muncie Southside High School into a middle school. Muncie Central will be the district's only high school.

Cowan Community Schools superintendent Dennis Chambers tells The Star Press about 15 Muncie students have started the process to transfer in January, but some grades in the Cowan schools can't accept more students.

The Monroe Central and Delaware Community schools say they've each talked with about two dozen Muncie students about transfers.

Muncie schools officials say declining enrollment and budget troubles forced the consolidation decision.
