89-year-old woman dies in pond at Mishawaka complex

MISHAWAKA (AP) — Police say an 89-year-old woman with severe dementia drowned in a pond after leaving her assisted-living apartment unnoticed.

Mishawaka police say Christel Moryl was found by her caregiver Monday in a pond at the Waterford by Edison Lakes community. Police Division Chief Steve Ravotto tells the South Bend Tribune that she was last seen the night before when she spoke briefly with a nurse in a hallway before going to her apartment.

The St. Joseph County coroner's office ruled Moryl's death an accidental drowning.

Deputy coroner Chuck Hurley says a steep gravel embankment might have prevented Moryl from getting out of the pond.
