Muncie voters reject tax hike to fund school buses

MUNCIE (AP) — Muncie voters have rejected a proposed property tax increase intended to keep school buses running in the city's school district after this school year.

A majority of voters in the central Indiana city voted Tuesday against the referendum that would have collected about $3.3 million for Muncie Community Schools.

School Board member Debbie Feick tells The Star Press she's "absolutely devastated" by voters' decision on the referendum. She says that while the referendum's opponents have maintained that the district's buses will continue running after this school year she says that won't be the case.

The district says it needed the tax increase to keep operating buses for students and extra-curricular activities. Without the increase, district officials say the school buses won't run for the 2014-15 school year.
