---- — ST. JOHN, Ind. (AP) — A 15-foot-tall marble Virgin Mary statue has been moved after nearly six decades from its spot along a northwestern Indiana highway.
A crane lifted the statue from its platform next to U.S. 41 on Wednesday despite opponents trying to stop plans to move it to a nearby church in the Lake County town of St. John.
Rich Pitcher lives across the highway from the shrine and tells The Times (http://bit.ly/19UzrTf ) that it's sad to lose the statue where he's seen bikers and wedding parties stop and pray.
St. John the Evangelist Catholic parish leaders plan to swap the marble statue with a 33-foot-tall metal St. Mary statue that is now outside the church about a half mile away.
