Family of 9 escapes overnight house fire in Indy

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A family of nine rushed from their Indianapolis home when a phone call from a neighbor in the middle of the night warned the parents that their house was on fire.

The Indianapolis Fire Department says that Chris and Melanie Woolard and their seven children ranging from 6 months to 11 years old escaped the fire without injury.

Lt. Larry Tracy says neither Chris nor Melanie Woolard were aware of the fire until a neighbor saw flames shooting out of the house and called them shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday.

Firefighters brought the fire under control within a half hour. Damage to the home was estimated at $20,000.

Fire officials say the fire was likely sparked by a heat pump.
