State park visitors warned about aggressive coyotes

LAFAYETTE (AP) — Visitors to a state park near Lafayette are being warned about reports of aggressive coyotes.

Officials say a portion of Prophetstown State Park was temporarily closed to the public last weekend while conservation officers looked for coyotes that had come closer to visitors and pets than normal.

State Parks & Reservoirs official Mike Mycroft tells the Journal & Courier that nothing was found in that search and that no injuries or attacks have been reported.

Mycroft says coyotes have a natural fear of people, but sometimes become more comfortable about approaching them.

Mycroft says officials are asking visitors to abide by park rules and stay aware of their surroundings.
