Fire damages Marian University classroom building

Indianapolis — Fire damaged a classroom building at Marian University in Indianapolis, forcing out more than a dozen students who were inside practicing for a play.

The fire broke out Monday night in Fisher Hall, with flames eventually burning through part of its roof.

City fire Lt. Larry Tracy says 17 people were inside the building when they smelled smoke. One man who went to warn others inside was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation, while everyone else safely escaped.

The building dates back to 1909 when its original portion was built as the home of Carl Fisher, one of the founders of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Officials at the private 2,500-student school are moving classes to other locations while the building's fire and smoke damage is checked out.
