Marion fire chief pleads guilty to theft

MARION (AP) — A central Indiana city's former fire chief has pleaded guilty to theft charges filed after authorities say he traded vacation and sick time for cash and took bonuses for which he wasn't entitled.

Stephen Gorrell made the guilty plea Thursday in a Grant County court for actions between 2006 and 2011 while he was chief of Marion's fire department. He's now retired.

Prosecutors charged him with stealing nearly $11,000 by improperly taking money for sick days and vacation days and claiming dive team and CPR specialty pay.

The Chronicle-Tribune and WPTA-TV report official misconduct and corrupt influence charges are being dismissed in the plea agreement that calls for Gorrell to be sentenced to up to a year in jail.

His sentencing hearing is scheduled for Dec. 17.
