83-year-old dies after crash into NW Ind. lake

HOBART, Ind. (AP) — Police say an 83-year-old woman died after being rescued from her car that crashed into the water at a northwestern Indiana city's downtown lake walkway.

Hobart police say Shirley Gronlund of Valparaiso might have had a medical problem before Wednesday's crash as she hit the mailbox at her home and was driving erratically on nearby streets. The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune report Gronlund's car went through a fence and into Lake George near the gazebo for Hobart's Lakefront Park.

A police diver pulled Gronlund from the car in about 10 feet of water, but authorities say she died about four hours later.

Kristie Amaya says she was at a nearby bank when she saw the car sped up as if the driver hit the accelerator by mistake.
