IUPUI opens food pantry to address student needs

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Students at IUPUI are working to help feed their classmates through a new food pantry on the downtown Indianapolis campus.

The pantry that opened Wednesday was the brainchild of social work major Erin Sass and mechanical engineering major Joe Spaulding.

WTHR-TV reports pantry organizers found nearly one in three IUPUI students qualified for free lunches during high school. An estimated 20 percent of students are "food insecure" and uncertain where their next meal is coming from.

Pantry customer Dejah Miles says the pantry allows her to focus on her studies and not worry about how to pay for meals.

The food pantry is open two mornings and evenings a month. Organizers hope donations increase as more students learn of the panty and depend on it.
