Indiana board considering tighter painkiller rules

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Medical Licensing Board is considering tighter rules that doctors would have to follow when prescribing painkillers.

The proposal follows concerns about overdose deaths from drugs such as Vicodin, Percocet and Oxycontin.

The Indianapolis Star reports doctors would be expected to see patients taking such drugs at least every four months and conduct annual saliva or urine tests to make sure the person is taking the medication. Patients would also have to agree to not share the drugs and face random pill counts.

State Attorney General Greg Zoeller says greater attention needs to be paid to the painkillers.

Dr. Colleen Brown of St. Vincent Health says she worries the rules might scare away some people with cancer from seeking pain medications.
