LAFAYETTE (AP) — Classes are going on as scheduled at a Lafayette elementary school even as damage is being repaired from a minivan crashing into the building.
City police believe the van's brakes went out Wednesday afternoon when it went through the front yard of Vinton Elementary School. The van slammed into the school's brick wall, leaving the van's front half inside a kindergarten classroom.
Lafayette schools Superintendent Les Huddle tells WLFI-TV that classes ended about an hour before the crash and no one was in the classroom at the time. He says the building is safe and the kindergarten class will be moved to another room.
Police tell the Journal & Courier that three people in the van declined treatment for minor injuries. The driver was arrested on driving while suspended charges.
