State law change means Fishers becomes city in 2015

FISHERS (AP) — The booming suburban Indianapolis town of Fishers will become a city in 2015.

Indiana's largest town said Tuesday that a change in state law taking effect July 1 means Fishers will elect its first city mayor, city council members and city clerk during the 2014 election cycle. Under the law change, the town of 80,000 residents will become a city on January 1, 2015, and the newly elected city officials will take office that day.

Before the change, the Fishers Town Council had the authority to choose whether the transition to a city would occur in 2015 or 2016.

Voters in Fishers approved a ballot measure last November to transition to a city.
