Indiana recycling bill heads to governor's desk

Indianapolis — Legislation that sets a goal for Indiana to eventually recycle at least half of its municipal waste is headed to Gov. Mike Pence's desk after passing the General Assembly.

Indiana Recycling Coalition Executive Director Carey Hamilton says the bill will create jobs and shift trash away from Indiana's landfills.

The bill authored by Republican state Rep. Dave Wolkins of Warsaw originally included a provision requiring Indiana to meet the 50 percent recycling goal by 2019, but that was later removed.

Lawmakers gave final approval to the bill last week. It includes a measure directing Indiana to create a recycling-tracking system.

Pence spokeswoman Kara Brooks says the bill was part of the governor's legislative agenda. She says Pence believes "it is time for a fresh look at recycling in Indiana."
