Sentencing overhaul passes Indiana Legislature

Indianapolis — A sweeping overhaul of Indiana's criminal sentencing law is on its way to Gov. Mike Pence for final approval.

State senators voted unanimously in favor of the changes Thursday, the last day of this year's legislative session. The House previously approved the bill.

Supporters say the revamped system will dish out harsher penalties for the worst offenders and place nonviolent criminals in more appropriate correction facilities. The revised code also could save the state money by reducing the prison population.

State lawmakers have been reworking the current code for more than five years. This is the first major overhaul of the system in more than three decades.
