Off-campus smokers at Ball State draw complaints

MUNCIE (AP) — Ball State University police officers have started ticketing students for littering when they drop cigarette butts at an off-campus smoking spot.

The university banned smoking on the Muncie campus this summer, which has sent smokers looking for nearby spots where they can light up. One spot is along a city street on the western edge of campus.

Ball State spokeswoman Joan Todd tells The Star Press that residents have complained about people trespassing on private property, being loud and standing on the narrow street without sidewalks.

Todd says officers on regular patrols have written at least three tickets after seeing cigarette butts tossed down.

Student smoker Chris Cutting says the school pushed smokers from campus and not everyone uses the available trash cans.
