Police say 2 construction workers killed on I-69

Indianapolis — Police say two highway workers have been killed after a pickup truck crashed in an Interstate 69 construction zone on the northeast side of Indianapolis.

The crash happened about 6 a.m. Friday in the southbound lanes of the highway a couple miles north of I-465. Video from Indianapolis television station helicopters showed a wrecked pickup truck amid several construction vehicles, with morning commute traffic backed up for more than a mile.

State highway department spokesman Nathan Riggs tells WISH-TV those who died worked for a contractor doing overnight paving work and were removing lane restrictions when the crash happened. It wasn't immediately clear how badly the pickup driver was injured.
