Students from damaged schools returning to classes

LAFAYETTE (AP) — Nearly 1,000 students are heading back to classes a week after severe storms badly damaged two schools near Lafayette.

Open houses were held Sunday so that students from Southwestern Middle and Mintonye Elementary schools could check out what will be their new classrooms starting Monday morning. Pre-school through sixth grade students will attend classes at a former school owned by First Assembly Community Ministries, while seventh- and eighth-graders will head to Wea Ridge Middle School.

Sixth-grader Morgan Flynn tells the Journal & Courier that it'll be different going to a new school but she appreciates the welcome signs.

Parent Amber King tells WLFI-TV it's been a long week for the children and that it will be good to have them all back together.
