Pence set to sign Indiana voucher expansion bill

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Gov. Mike Pence is ready to sign into law an expansion of the state's private school voucher program.

The governor's office says Pence will sign the bill Thursday afternoon at Calvary Christian School on the south side of Indianapolis.

The plan approved by the Republican-dominated Legislature will allow more children to be eligible for vouchers without first having to spend at least a year in public schools.

Those immediately eligible will include the siblings of current voucher students and children living in the attendance district of a public school that received a state performance grade of F.

Opponents argue that the voucher expansion will drain more money from public schools.

About 9,100 students are receiving vouchers in the program's second school year.
