Police say Indiana man died after meth explosion

NORTH VERNON (AP) — Police in southern Indiana say a 39-year-old man died after an explosion while he and another man were making methamphetamine inside a home.

Jennings County authorities say Brian Short of North Vernon died early Sunday and 28-year-old Lacy Smith of Butlerville was arrested on murder and other charges.

Sheriff's Maj. Jerry Shepherd tells The Republic that the men were preparing meth in the kitchen of Smith's rural home when the explosion happened. Shepherd says Smith put Short into a vehicle and drove to a home near North Vernon when police were called.

Coroner Gene Rudicel says Short was pronounced dead at the scene and an autopsy was planned.

Smith was jailed without bond on Monday. A jail officer said records didn't indicate whether he had an attorney.
