State police warns drivers to watch for students

PERU (AP) — Indiana State Police are reminding drivers to be on the lookout for children waiting for buses or walking along roadways as a new school year begins.

Police say motorists should be extra cautious while driving in school zones and near areas where students are waiting for buses.

Police also are reminding drivers that Indiana law requires them to stop when a school bus stop arm is extended. Disregarding a school bus stop arm is a misdemeanor punishable with up to 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Police ask parents to emphasize to children the need for them to be careful, saying most school bus-related accidents involve children who dash in front of a car or school bus to retrieve papers or other dropped articles.
