3 central Indiana cities seek grant to boost manufacturing

MUNCIE (AP) — Three central Indiana cities that once had thousands of auto workers have joined together in seeking a $20 million federal grant to help attract new businesses to their empty factories.

The cities of Muncie, Anderson and New Castle have each put up $50,000 in matching money for $150,000 in federal funding toward strategy development.

East Central Indiana Regional Planning District president Roy Budd says the three communities can make a compelling case for the grant. Budd tells The Star Press that the U.S. Economic Development Administration is expected to award three $20 million grants from among 10 groups that received the strategy funding.

The partnership's application says more than 40,000 jobs have been lost in Muncie, Anderson and New Castle in past decades from the closure of auto-related jobs.
