Muncie nears consolidating to single high school

Muncie —

A majority of Muncie's school board members say they believe the district has no choice but to consolidate its two high schools into one.

The board members spoke during a meeting Thursday night with district administrators on possibilities for long-term spending cuts as the district has lost nearly 1,000 students in recent years.

The Star Press reports four of the five board members said they believed the current Muncie Central and Muncie Southside high schools needed to be combined. A vote on a school plan is expected Nov. 18.

Administrators say the current Muncie Central building could accommodate the current enrollment of nearly 1,800 students from both schools.

Hundreds of people packed a meeting at Muncie Southside in August arguing against the possibility of closing the school.
