Dye packs to blame for neon color to Mississinewa River

ALBANY (AP) — Officials say the substance that turned a stretch of a central Indiana river neon green came from military dye packs intended for pilots to use in sea rescues.

The fluorescent coloring was reported Sunday in the Mississinewa (mis-ih-SIHN'-uh-wah) River near the Delaware County town of Albany.

County emergency management director Jason Rogers tells The Star Press that the dye wasn't believed hazardous and no fish kills were immediately found. Yellow packs labeled "sea dye marker" were found and could've been military surplus items.

Police were looking for who dumped the dye into the river about 10 miles north of Muncie.

Rogers says the dye was expected to color the river for several miles for at least a day and that officials in neighboring Grant County were notified.
