South Bend mural volunteers have ladders stolen

Associated Press

SOUTH BEND (AP) — Volunteers painting a large mural on a bridge that's an entryway to downtown South Bend are frustrated after thieves took their ladders.

Work began this spring on the 172,000-square-foot brightly colored river scene along Indiana 933 underneath a pedestrian bridge.

Police Capt. Phil Trent says the five ladders were reported stolen Wednesday. Trent tells the South Bend Tribune the ladders were apparently taken after someone cut a cable wire that secured them.

Artist Samantha Stackowicz tells WSBT-TV that volunteers could only work part of the day without the ladders. She says she's appalled the thefts could happen in such a public area just north of the city's downtown.
