Teen slain in Indianapolis as violent death toll grows

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indianapolis police say a 16-year boy has been fatally shot at an apartment complex, adding to the city's death toll from a rash of shootings.

Police say James Johnson was fatally shot Monday next to a swing set at an apartment complex on the city's near east side. He was slain hours after the city announced a 3-year plan to move 156 officers onto street patrol in high-crime areas.

The Indianapolis Star reports that before Monday's shooting, Indianapolis had recorded 70 shootings so far this year, and 16 homicides in June alone.

The youngster's killing comes less than a week after another 16-year-old boy was fatally shot following a downtown Fourth of July fireworks show.

City police say another person was fatally shot in the city early Tuesday.
