Where in God’s green earth has reasoning gone?
In my time here on earth, I have seen many things. There have been both great and scary things that happened to us as we move from babies to youngsters to grown-ups.
Many of us have been blessed with both parents living to a good age before God calls them home. We learn from those who came before us, and we tried to make our lives better by using the experience of others as a reason to do one thing or another.
In our family of seven boys and seven girls, Mom and Dad gave us the best they had, and bless them for that. We were taught that school was very important and good habits were needed to be better people.
For about 13 years of my life, we lived in a mixed neighborhood, and I think that it made us better people. Neighbors were very friendly, and most of them would give you the shirt off their backs whenever you needed help. Neighbors back then not only watched their children but also those of others.
We would sit out on the side porch, and Mom would tell us stories of her young days. Our friends there in that neighborhood enjoyed listening to her. She also would sit down at the piano and sing some songs with us, and every once in a while she would give out a laugh and tell us to sing with her. I know there were times when our mother would be very tired but she still did everything she could to make our young lives enjoyable ones.
I remember our first television. It was a great thing back then, and not everyone could afford one. So there were many times when our friends would drop in to watch with us. As I have said before, we were not poor, but money was tight and we did without many things others would be able to have because of what their parents had for jobs.
