Gabbi Samuel’s thoughts:

I have been working at Subway for four months. I am interested in a career involving foods, so I applied at a variety of restaurants. On my first day at Subway, I watched other employees make sandwiches. After that, I advanced to being the veggie selections person and then made my way to the meats. When I work mornings, I do prep, dishes, lobby cleanup and stock lids and chips. I have enjoyed earning a paycheck so I can buy Christmas presents this year. Mr. Saylor, my culinary arts teacher at the Kokomo Area Career Center, is a very good instructor. At the career center, I also enjoy preparing sweets for our candy store (Kokomo Confectioners’ Company, 207 E. Superior Street) since I am planning to attend Sullivan University in Louisville after graduation and study baking and pastry arts. I hope to open my own bakery someday.

Ashley Byrd’s comments:

Subway survived the tornadoes, and we are very appreciative of the community for waiting for us to re-open on Black Friday and supporting us. Gabbi is an awesome worker, and she is taking advantage of the School to Work program, which allows her to report to work earlier in the school day since the job is part of her curriculum. Not only does Gabbi see what needs to be done, she becomes more confident with each day of work experience. With the training Gabbi received at the career center in culinary arts, combined with the hands-on experience in the food business, Gabbi has a solid foundation for her goal to open a bakery business.
